Here’s the latest 2025 update on the cinnamon and star anise market in Vietnam, focusing on production, export volume, and pricing

Cinnamon

  • From January to May 2025, Vietnam exported around 34,000 tons of cinnamon, earning about USD 101 million, up 27.8% in volume and 0.7% in value compared to the same period last year.

  • Main markets:

    • India leads with 37% market share (~13,000 tons, +38% YoY).

    • Bangladesh: 11.6% (~4,000 tons, +102%).

    • USA: 11.4% (~3,000 tons, -7.9%).

    • China: 3.2% (~1,078 tons), with a remarkable growth of +1,934%.

  • Market trends:

    • Vietnam dominates the Indian market, accounting for 85% of India’s cinnamon imports in 2022–2023 (~32,650 tons).

    • Exporters are shifting towards organic production and premium segments to enhance competitiveness.

    • Challenges: increasing competition from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and India; stricter quality requirements from the EU and US (pesticide residues, food safety, organic certification).

  • Price:

    • Cassia stick (split cinnamon) in Hanoi is currently around 2.62 €/kg, with a slightly upward trend expected.

Star Anise

  • In Feb 2025 alone: export reached 724 tons (~USD 2.5 million), down 44.4% in volume compared to the previous month, showing monthly fluctuations.

  • Main market:

    • India accounts for 75% of total exports (~543 tons).

  • Price:

    • Domestic market: USD 5–10/kg, depending on quality and season (whole high-grade pods at the higher end, broken pieces cheaper).

    • FOB export price: USD 7–15/kg, depending on quality.
